What to See at St Pete Beach and What to Know

Image
The main attraction here is, of course, the beach! Most of what's offered here revolves around that. Try stand-up paddleboarding in Pass-a-Grille, or see how long you can stay on one of those huge water trikes in St. Pete Beach. Clearwater offers multiple parasailing outfitters from which to choose. Kayak rentals are a great way to see this stretch of island from the bay side. Many hotels also offer bike and fishing rod rentals.  Don't forget to do that staple of beach vacations: go putt-putting! There are plenty of courses all along this area. We had a blast one night at Smuggler's Cove in Indian Shores, where you can pause halfway through your game to feed some alligators. Spend the day at Caladesi Island State Park or Honeymoon Island. Caladesi Island is only accessible by ferry, kayak or personal boat, so it's one of your last chances to see a Florida beach completely unspoiled! Honeymoon Island was Florida's most visited state park for the last six year...

The Truth about Pirates

Image
The romanticization of the role that pirates have played throughout history is natural.  The idea of sailing the seven seas on a wooden pirate galleon , above the law and answerable only to your captain (whose wayward view of life is as freedom loving as yours) seems attractive. To turn this fantasy into a real one,  Pirate Cruise in St. Pete Beach FL offers you a one day pirate cruise trip.  But do you want to know how really pirates lived? Consider the reality of the life pirates lived below: Seasickness   While most pirates had good sea-legs (and those who didn’t at the beginning, soon became accustomed to the movement of the pirate ship or face the plank), sea-sickness during particularly bad weather was common. The smell alone of one seasick pirate would be enough to set the rest hanging over the edge of the boat. Bathing The smell of sick mates was not the only odor to accompany pirates on their adventures around the globe. Dirty bodies abound on p...

The Pirate Code

Image
In many historical and literary accounts of pirates and their adventures, you will find a reference to the pirate code. Even Johnny Depp’s character,   Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean   saga makes reference to the pirate code, a decree that binds pirates together by a common law for outlaws. What was the Pirate Code? Essentially, the pirate code was a code of conduct or articles of agreement drafted in order to keep pirates in line and governed. Contrary to the governance of legitimate sailors, who would follow the laws of their county and naval regiments, pirates would create their own set of laws to provide guidelines about how the pirate ship would be governed, how discipline was administered, the division of loot and how injured pirates would be compensated for their handicaps. Unlike national laws that would be authorized by kings/queens and governments, the pirate code often changed from ship to ship or voyage to voyage to suit the particulars of the ...

Where to grab a drink in St Pete Beach

Image
Vacation without drinks is boring. Here are some family-friendly establishments we found in St Pete Beach. Sandbox at Guy Harvey: Sandbox is probably my favorite spot for a night cap. Comfortable seating, fire pits, live music and $3 beer – all situated on the fricken beach. We could let the kids run free and play activities in the sand while we adults enjoyed listening to music by the fire with a cold one. My kids made some friends and were entertained for hours. I’ve never been so relaxed while having drinks out with my kids. Flying Bridge: I love Bloody Mary’s and the Flying Bridge had a fantastic one with garnishes galore. Hardy and spicy, I started every day off right with one of these bad boys as my breakfast. Sloppy Joe’s: Just because it is fun, we decided to share the Mai Tai Fish Bowl. Okay, quick funny story. My mom and I went to Sloppy Joe’s with the sole purpose of ordering this fish bowl cocktail. Call me silly, but I really was excited about that litt...
